May 19 & 20, 2007

Each Spring, the Rhode Island Center for the Book at PPL presents an event focused on the art of the book in Rhode Island, offered in partnership with other organizations. This year’s program was the “passion of paper - a RI weekend of exhibits, talks, and demonstrations on the art of handmade paper” held May 19 and 20, 2007. On Saturday, Dr. Cathleen Baker, author and Senior Paper Conservator at the University of Michigan Library, gave a lecture on “The Legacy of Dard Hunter” at the John Hay Library, Brown University. An exhibit of books by Dard Hunter, from the Hay’s Collection, were on display in the Lownes Room.

On Sunday afternoon, Ilse Buchert Nesbitt, Proprietor of Third and Elm Press in Newport, RI, gave a hand papermaking demonstration at the Newport Art Museum. An accompanying exhibit of her tools and papers are on display at the Providence Athenaeum until the beginning of July. The partnering organizations this year were John Russell Bartlett Society, American Printing History Association, NE Chapter, Friends of the Brown University Library, Letterpress Guild of New England, Providence Athenaeum, University of Rhode Island, and Rhode Island Center for the Book at Providence Public Library.
